Two-Day Rakú Workshop

Service Description
🔥 Two-Day Copper Matte Rakú Workshop *This workshop takes place across two Saturdays, with one booking including both sessions* Discover the unpredictable beauty of Copper Matte Raku in this immersive two-day workshop. You'll experience the process from beginning to end. First, you'll create your own ceramic piece by hand, with the option to wheel throw for those with throwing experience. The following week, you'll return to glaze your piece and take part in the Rakú firing process. Copper Matte Rakú is known for its extraordinary surfaces, where copper glazes react with heat, flame and reduction to reveal metallic copper, smoky blacks, intense pinks and blues, and iridescent tones. No two pieces are ever quite the same. DAY 1 | MAKE YOUR PIECE 📅 Saturday, 26th September 🕰️ 11:00-13:30 You'll receive 1.5kg of clay to create one medium-sized ceramic piece of your own design, approximately up to 25cm high and 15cm in diameter. Over 2.5 hours, we'll guide you through the making process and help you create a form suited to Copper Matte Rakú. Those with previous wheel-throwing experience may choose to use the wheel. Please note, this is not a wheel-throwing lesson and throwing instruction will not be provided. Your piece will then be dried and bisque-fired in preparation for Day 2. DAY 2 | GLAZE & RAKÚ FIRE 📅 Saturday, 3rd October 🕰️ 10:00-14:00 This is where the transformation happens. 🔥 You'll glaze your piece with Copper Matte Raku glaze and take part in the firing process. We'll bring the pieces up to temperature, remove them while glowing hot, and begin the reduction process that creates Copper Matte Raku's distinctive surface. You'll observe and assist throughout, experiencing firsthand how clay, glaze, heat, oxygen and flame interact to create unpredictable results. ✨ Beginner friendly 🏺 Create one medium-sized piece 👐 1.5kg of clay per participant 🎨 All clay, glazes & materials provided 🔥 Bisque + Copper Matte Rakú firing included 🥤 Bring your own drinks & snacks Please note: - Attendance on both dates is required. - Wheel throwing is only for participants with previous throwing experience. - Copper Matte Rakú is experimental.
